Illustration Friday prompt: Intention

What a good prompt! I had several ideas and several pictures that express this idea, but I decided to use the opportunity to squeeze in one more winter picture. Spring is on the brink of bursting forth here in Virginia, but we may still have a few days left of winter. We’ve barely seen a flake of snow here this year, so the chances of making a good snowball are close to nil, but that’s the beauty of art: if nature doesn’t provide it you can always draw it.

I think this young lady has the definite intention in her eyes to throw that snowball at someone…..

Illustration Friday prompt: Capable

Oh yes, I'm capable. So capable.

She looks capable doesn’t she? Maybe she needs to project a little more confidence, but I’m rooting for her to get the job!

I’ve been to lots of job interviews, a few times as the interviewer, but more often as the interviewee. What an awkward social situation. With few exceptions, the people who have interviewed me have been friendly and encouraging and I often I have ended up with a job offer.

There have been one or two disasters over the years, like the time I had to interview for the job I already had because the contractor had changed, and the manager wanted to give the job to somebody else and kept me waiting and hour and a half past our appointment time; the interview turned out to be very unpleasant and I ended up asking to see his manager. Or a recent interview I had for a technical writing job,  in which the guy expressed suspician at all the graphic arts experience on my resume.

“What’s all this graphics stuff on here?” he said, eyes narrowed.

“Oh,” I said, “Some people find it useful for tech writers to have graphics skills as well as writing skills.”

“Well we wouldn’t want you back there doodling,” he said.

I knew then it wasn’t going to work out.

Illustration Friday prompt is Fluid”….

The prompt this week at IllustrationFriday.com is “fluid.” I was a little thrown off by that at first. My first instinct was to draw a dancer. I already have several dancer pictures drawn. Then I remembered a little painting within a painting I did (see below) of a mermaid-like person in the ocean. I took that little painting idea out and gave it its own canvas so to speak.

Mermaid

Here is the picture in which this idea first showed up. It’s fun and interesting how, when you do art regularly, every day if possible, idea begine to come faster and build upon each other.

Popularity – This week’s Illustration Friday prompt

Popularity…. This was a bit of a difficult concept for me since the last time I cared about it or even thought about it was back in high school. But I think this picture illustrates the spirit of the word…..

Illustration Friday prompt: Suspense!

Suspense

I actually drew this picture the day before I went to IllustrationFriday.com to see this week’s prompt. I thought it fit. There is definitely a story going on here, and I was thinking of a certain person in a specific not so desirable situation when I was drawing it. Things are sort of up in the air for her right now – in suspense, you might say.

Illustration Friday prompt: Forward!

For this week’s prompt at Illustration Friday I offer this picture inspired by my immigrant ancesters. When you leave all you know behind you have nowhere to look but forward.

Looking Forward

I am amazed at the multitude of interpretations one word can inspire. You can see many more great illustrations at Illustration Friday.

Girl on swing about to “twirl” – Illustration Friday prompt of the week

The Illustration Friday prompt this week is “twirl.” Several ideas popped into my head, but the strongest seemed to be a memory of twisting my swing around tight as a child and then letting go to twirl around until I returned to two straight chains. I loved that. This was before the days of big plastic safety conscious play equipment.

Twirl

I remember those metal merry-go-rounds at the playground – just a big metal disk brightly painted in a pie pattern and rails without so much as a “warning” sign to hold onto the rails. One kid would grab a rail and run around to spin the then thing and everyone else wold stand on the disk and hand on for dear life. I remember kids hanging on to the raisl with their feet flying inthe air. Those were the days…..there’s another idea for “twirl.”

Illustration Friday challenge word: “Prepare”

It’s been a while since I’ve seen any actual snow, but as I recall, both from my childhood days and getting my own children dressed and booted, it takes quite a bit of preparation to get ready to go out and play in it. That’s why this picture is my offering for this week’s “Illustration Friday” challenge. Still hoping for one good snow day here in southeastern Virginia.

First attempt to illustrate a topic for Illustration Fridays: Grounded

I have posted this picture before, but I am posting it again as a concept illustration for a fun challenge I discovered on a website called Illustration Friday. Every Friday they post a topic and you get to illustrate the topic and post a link. This week’s topic is “grounded” and as I thought about how I would go about illustrating that concept, I thought of this picture. So…. as this is my first try at participating in this group, I thought I’d test the waters with this picture, which happens to be one of my personal favorites.
