AEDM Day 5: Illustration from The Golden Key, a fairy tale by George MacDonald

Today’s picture is an attempt at an illustration of a scene from The Golden Key, a fairy tale written by 19th century writer George MacDonald. I am not entirely satisfied with this picture yet, so it is still a work in progress. MacDonald probably best known for his book The Princess and the Goblin, which I loved as a child. The Golden Key is a a strange and vivid fairy tale, really a sort of allegory for the journey of life. In one scene, the heroine—Tangle—is walking through an enchanted forest in fairyland and suddenly realizes she is being folowed by an “air fish”, a fish that swims through the air and has feathers and a beak. This story is so colorful that I am thinking of storyboarding and illustrating the whole thing.
